Overview

Teeth that are damaged, worn, or decayed can often be restored and protected with a dental crown. Crowns, also known as caps, are custom made to fit over a tooth and colored to blend seamlessly with your smile. Our team of skilled restorative dentists routinely use crowns to restore health and appearance to the smiles of our patients. Dr. Najib Adi and team may recommend a crown to treat a range of restorative needs and offer custom crowns in a variety of materials to meet your needs and preferences, including all porcelain, all metal, and porcelain-fused-to-metal. We also used dental crowns to complete tooth replacement procedures with single dental implants. To learn if a crown is right for your damaged tooth, schedule a consultation at Atlas Walk Dental & Orthodontics in Gainesville, VA today.

Best Candidates for Dental Crowns

Dental crowns may be used to restore oral health and appearance in a number of situations. Crowns offer protection and coverage for teeth that are decayed, cracked, or worn. They are also used to protect a tooth that has been root canal-treated or to replace a large filling. Misshapen or discolored teeth may also benefit from a custom dental crown. Crowns also comprise a dental bridge and restore a dental implant to replace a missing tooth.

Dr. Adi and the Atlas Walk team use different materials to create custom-crowns based on where in the mouth they are being placed as well as other oral concerns. All-porcelain crowns may be chosen for teeth that show when you smile, whereas porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are often placed on back teeth. Our restorative dentists are highly skilled at selecting the right shape, color, and size of your new crown to match your smile. We can also discuss your crown options and help you choose the material best suited for your needs, goals, and budget.

What To Expect

To begin your crown procedure, Dr. Adi will numb your tooth and surrounding gum tissues. Sedation dentistry can be administered if you are anxious about your treatment. Our team will then remove any decay or damage from the tooth and build up the structure with a special material. We will take an impression of the tooth and send this mold to our elite partner dental lab where your custom crown will be created. A temporary crown will be placed on your tooth until your permanent crown is ready. The process for creating your permanent restoration takes about 1 2 weeks. When your crown arrives at our office, we will schedule an appointment to cement it permanently in place and adjust your bite to ensure it is correct.

Recovery

You may experience minor discomfort and mild inflammation around your crown following the preparatory procedure. Be sure to avoid eating until the numbness from the dental anesthetic has completely worn off. Our team will instruct you on how to care for both your temporary crown and your permanent crown once it is placed. We will also demonstrate the proper technique for brushing and flossing your crown each day. At each of your future dental exam visits at Atlas Walk Dental & Orthodontics, Dr. Adi or a member of his team continue to assess the integrity of your crown to ensure its function. With proper care, your crown should last for several years. Contact our office right away if your crown feels loose or comes off. We do not recommend that you attempt to fix it on your own, as this can cause damage to the underlying tooth or your oral health.

Insurance Coverage

A portion of the crown procedure may be covered by your dental insurance provider. To determine your coverage amount and any out-of-pocket costs, our team will contact your insurance representative to review your benefits schedule. Our team at Atlas Walk Dental & Orthodontics wants you to get the care you need for a beautiful, healthy smile and accepts most PPOs and several convenient payment options to cover the cost of your care. We can also provide information on flexible third-party treatment financing through CareCredit®.
