Overview

To allow our team a better view of your overall dental health, we take digital x-rays (radiographs) during annual dental checkup visits and as needed to assess your oral health. Digital x-rays produce about 90 percent less radiation than traditional film x-rays and are a safer and more diagnostic alternative for our patients. General dentists Dr. Najib Adi and team use digital x-rays to diagnose conditions and view parts of your mouth and jaw that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Some of these conditions include tooth decay between teeth, infected teeth, cysts or abscesses in the bone, bone loss, and impacted teeth, among others. When we can detect such dental concerns early on, we can often minimize treatment needs and offer less invasive care. At Atlas Walk Dental & Orthodontics in Gainesville, VA, we put your health and safety first and are proud to offer low-radiation dental imaging to more accurately diagnose and treat the oral needs of our patients.

Best Candidates

Digital x-rays are generally part of your annual dental exam. We may take them as a preventive measure to screen for and diagnose concerns not clinically evident in your mouth or when you have pain or other signs or symptoms of a dental issue. Even though the digital x-rays we use produce much lower radiation than traditional film methods, our team at Atlas Walk Dental & Orthodontics prefers to minimize patient exposure whenever possible. Dental x-rays are safe for most patients, including children. However, women who are pregnant or who may be pregnant should let a member of our team know right away so that we can take special precautions.

What to Expect

Our team typically takes x-rays at the beginning of your dental exam. Depending on the type of x-rays being taken, the entire process usually only requires about 5 – 10 minutes. Our digital software incorporates small dental sensors that are placed in your mouth and used to transmit digital images of your teeth and bone directly to our computer. Dr. Adi and team will review your x-rays with you and point out any areas of concern. Having x-rays taken by our team at Atlas Walk Dental & Orthodontics is a fast, simple, and safe procedure.

Follow-Up

Dr. Adi and team typically recommend that patients have bitewing x-rays taken once each year, typically during your dental exam. Every three years, we will take a full mouth series or panoramic x-ray to provide a more comprehensive view of your teeth and supporting jawbone. Once take, digital x-rays become a part of your patient file and can be used for current treatment or to provide baseline data for future evaluation of your oral health.

Insurance Coverage

Most dental insurance plans cover bitewing x-rays on a yearly basis and a full mouth series or panoramic x-ray every three to five years. Our team will review your coverage and let you know of any out-of-pocket costs. If you are not using insurance or if your insurance will not cover your entire x-ray expense, we will be happy to inform you of our convenient payment options, including patient financing with CareCredit®.

X-rays are an important diagnostic tool that Dr. Adi and team rely on to properly diagnose and determine treatment needs for our patients.
